Roman Fort in Iža - Kelemantia

Monumnet, Architecture

It was the Romans who built at Iža the first fort on the left bank of the Danube. Celemantia is the largest and most fabled reminder of Roman times in Slovakia.

The castellum was part of a fortification system stretching along the Danube that formed the Roman province of Pannonia’s northern border. Construction of the fort must have been extremely challenging because almost all of the building materials the Romans used - stone, lime, timber and brick - had to be transported by boats from the opposite bank of the Danube. The low, square mound that is Celemantia today only rises slightly above the surrounding flat countryside. In 1990, this area was declared a national cultural monument.
