Peatlands

Nature Interest

Oravská Polhora is known not only as the northernmost village in Slovakia, but it is also rich in natural attractions. We can talk, for example, about peat bogs (Slaná voda, Tisovnica and Rašelinisko Polhorská píla), which are protected by law.

A peat bog is a special type of ecosystem - a wetland, in which dead plant remains accumulate and peat is formed from these when there is a lack of atmospheric oxygen. Nowadays, peat bogs are a rarity in Slovakia .

Orava Logging Railway

In practice, the logging railway in Oravská Lesná in Orava was not only cheaper with respect to the construction and operation, compared to the conventional railways, but it also could cope with a very rugged terrain.
