Most of us think that mining and metallurgy involve very hard work, but when talking about these industries, we also imagine the little miner dwarfs, so-called „permoník“, who belong to every legend about mining; if these miner dwarfs disappear, the wealth from the mines will fade away as well.
The buildings, where the Exposition of Mining and Metallurgy in Liptov is situated, once belonged to the iron factory from the end of the 18th century. These buildings originally served as a clapper (Klopačka)(which was knocking to announce the beginning and the end of a work day) and a weigh office (Vážnica). Nowadays, both buildings are declared to be technical monuments of the second degree.
In 1792, the inhabitants of the village of Hybe (Hybe is a village in Liptov) were given the permission to forge iron. As a result, they built the smelt house for copper-ore production and the blast furnace called Maša for iron-ore production in „Podjaková“ – situated between Liptovský Hrádok and Kráľova Lehota. Iron ore was then weighed at the weigh office. Copper was used to forge copper sheets, which were transported on so-called “half-rafts” down the river Váh. Then in Ružomberok, these sheets were joined into whole pieces and then transported further up the Danube River to Vienna, where also other delicacies from Liptov were imported, including salt, sheep cheese (bryndza) and cheese.
In Liptovský Hrádok very high-quality iron was processed with the aid of specialists from Germany, who belonged to the Royal workers. Therefore, a new factory for production of rifles, pistols and carbines was built here at the beginning of the 19thcentury.
Nowadays, mining and production of iron ore in Liptovský Hrádok have only historical significance and today’s generation can see only two crossed mining hammers at the lower part of the town’s coat-of-arms.

Demänovská jaskyňa slobody is part of the huge underground karst system in the valley Demänovská dolina below the Nízke Tatry Mts. It boasts a unique drip stone ornamentation, which makes it one of the most beautiful caves of Europe.
The Važecká jaskyňa cave, which is located on the southern edge of the village of Važec, is the most visited natural landmark of the upper Liptov region. The cave is counted among the best-known paleontological sites as far as discoveries of bones of the cave bear are concerned.
Passing through the region of Liptov, from Liptovský Mikuláš to Ružomberok, one must notice a huge water area of the dam Liptovská Mara. It is the largest water reservoir in Slovakia in terms of the confined water volume.
The villages Prosiek a Kvačany in region Liptov are generally known as starting points for the trips to the most beautiful and most visited of the Slovak valleys - Prosiecka dolina and Kvačianska dolina.
The village of Bešeňová is one of the few precious places with occurrence of "freshwater" limestone, so-called travertine. These precious calcite forms arised thanks to mineral contents of water, its temperature and, of course, the surface and structure of the landscape. If you have some free time, come and visit this "forsaken" pit situated to the north of the village.
Roháče are often and justly praised as the most beautiful part of the West Tatras. A crown of wonderful peaks dominated by the majestic Baníkov Mt. surrounds the extensive Roháčska dolina valley. In turn, the Ostrý Roháč and Volovec Mts. are the princes of the Roháče Mts. They form an indivisible couple of slender rock mountains in the principal ridge and look like two devils horns, expressed by their names (Ostrý Roháč means a sharp horn and Volovec means an ox).

The Castle Hrádok built on a small hill near the river Belá is situated in the town Liptovský Hrádok in the north of Slovakia. Though several versions of a story narrating the origin of the castle exist, one thing is certain: the first reference to the castle is from 1341.

Museum of Liptov Village is the most attractive landmark of the Liptov region. It displays the typical folk architecture. The impetus behind the establishing of the museum was the extensive flooding caused by the construction of the Liptovská Mara dam.
The outskirts of the town of Liptovský Mikuláš are quietly guarded from the north-eastward by the hill Háj. At this place you can find the commemorative area with a cemetery and the war memorial dedicated to soldiers who were killed particularly in the spring 1945. This place should remain the symbol of patriotism which helped to resist fascism even at the cost of losing soldiers’ lives.

The building that houses the museum is one of the most distinctive buildings of the square in the town of Liptovský Mikuláš. It has several names - the County House (Stoličný House), the Illešházy Manor House and the Seliga's House. It features a triple arch that is unusual for the town and stands out from the rest of the buildings on the square's western side.

Experts classify water mills in the valley Kvačianska dolina among the mountain type of mills. They stand in what is often referred to as a most beautiful Slovak valleys, in the mountain range Chočské vrchy. This is one of the last surviving monuments of its kind and in its natural environment.
