Gallery of Nitra

Museum & Gallery

Nitra Gallery, founded on January 1st, 1965, has started its exhibitions with a show of Nitra´s artists, both contemporaneous and past. Its activities of exhibition, collection and education surpass local level in their importance and caused the institution to be recognized as being one of district (1968) and regional importance (1972).

Exhibitions of a smaller scale are commonly installed in the Salon of the Nitra Gallery. This place is offered to contemporaneous regional artists for presenting their works and interconnecting creative activities of Slovakia´s other regions.

The Representation Rooms are the gallery´s main exhibition area, used for exhibitions of national and international importance, based usually on curator research.

In 2002, Nitra Gallery renewed the Youth Gallery, a project aimed at encouraging talented artists of the youngest generation by offering them the opportunity of individual exhibitions. This alternative and dynamically designed zone enables presenting of the works of students of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, graduates of other artistic universities and young theoreticians of fine arts.

A new exhibition area called the Bunker, which was formerly a civil defence shelter, offers space for experiments with a variety of forms of contemporary visual arts and also provides links to other art forms including theatre and music. Installations, video projections and performance are all marked by drawing inspiration from this unusual place. The Bunker will also host a project called the Gallery of Young Curators.

In addition to music events (Gallery of Music - a concert series of classical music), postmutART - concerts of contemporary music with inter-media features), events related to visual arts (Nights of Visual Arts Reflections - meetings with artists exhibiting their works in the gallery, Creative Reflections of Exhibitions - creative workshops for adults with art-therapeutic focus) and other cultural and social events (4-3-2-1... - discussions with contemporary Slovak writers), the gallery also organizes creative workshops, workshops focused on visual arts, education projects (for example Art Through Play) and a variety of other related events.

An important event the gallery organizes on the occasion of the International Day of Galleries and Museums (May 18) is the Nitra Gallery Week - a week full of various events for schools and for the general public. As part of the international Theater Festival "Divadelná Nitra" (September), the Nitra Gallery has prepared an event for its visitors called the White night (Biela noc), when all current exhibitions are open to the public until midnight with free entry.
