CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS

Kostol sv. Mikuláša

The Church of St. Nicholas dominates the historical centre of Liptovský Mikuláš and is the oldest constructional monument of the town and the biggest Early Gothic construction in the region of Liptov. The church was built at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries and it has undergone several reconstructions and the most considerable one was the rebuilding in Baroque style. After an extensive reconstruction of 1941-43, the church could shine again in its Early Gothic design. Side chapels with beautiful stained-glass windows were built next to it. The stained-glass windows were designed by painters Janko Alexy, Fero Kráľ and Ján Želibský. Masterpieces which were preserved inside the church interior include a valuable stone font from 1490 with a wrought Baroque cover of copper from the 17th century and three panelled Gothic altars.
