Divadlo Aréna patrí svojou tradíciou medzi najstaršie divadlá v Bratislave. Založené bolo v roku 1828 na petržalskom brehu Dunaja, v blízkosti historického verejného parku. Spočiatku slúžilo ako letné divadlo – nekrytý amfiteáter, odtiaľ názov Aréna.
V roku 1898 na jej mieste postavili novú divadelnú budovu, ktorej vzhľad ostal odvtedy až do dnešnej doby takmer nezmenený. Od vzniku divadla až do konca druhej svetovej vojny účinkovalo v Divadle Aréna množstvo maďarských, rakúskych a nemeckých divadelných spoločností. Jedným z nich bolo i dnes populárne viedenské divadlo Theater an der Wien, ktoré tu pravidelne hrávalo od roku 1921.
