National Park of Malá Fatra

The National Park of Malá Fatra is situated in the westernmost Slovak high mountains Malá Fatra. Gorges, rock peaks and an attractive ridge tour are among its attractions.
The only access road to the Vrátna valley, the most attractive part of the Malá Fatra Mts. is from the village Terchová. The Vrátna valley has four points of access: Tiesňavy, Stará dolina, Nová dolina and Starý dvor.
Immediately beyond Terchová the road passes through an impressing entrance to the valley Vrátna, the canyon of Tiesňavy, with the Vrátňanka brook. It has many rock forms skirting the cascading brook. This National Nature Reserve consists of the proper canyon, the mountain ridge and the adjacent slopes of the Sokolie and Boboty Mts. The Zbojnícky chodník (The Robbers Path) starts in Tiesňavy and leads through the interesting parts of rock landscape. The Vrátna valley forks into the Stará and Nová dolina valleys beyond the Tiesňavy.
At the head of the Stará dolina valley is the tourist cottage Chata Vrátna. Not far away from the lower station of the chair lift to the saddle Snilovské sedlo is the Symbolic cemetery dedicated to victims of mountains. Hikers also like to stop at the Skok waterfall. The Chata Vrátna cottage serves as the base for trips to the main ridge of the Krivánska Fatra Mts. with its tallest mountain Veľký Kriváň (1,709 m).

The village Štefanová with numerous buildings built in traditional style is situated in the north-west of Slovakia at the foothill of the mountain Veľký Rozsutec (1,610 m).
The mountain Veľký Choč towering above the dividing line between regions Liptov and Orava is one of the most beautiful in Slovakia. You can bathe in the Laura thermal spa in two swimming pools, from which one is for the children. The water temperature is 20 - 26oC. The area also offers mini-golf, beach volley, restaurants and snack bars with fast food. A parking lot is nearby.
The Aphrodite Spa Rajecké Teplice is situated amid the scenic natural surroundings of the Malá Fatra and Strážovské Hills. The Spa offers healing thermal water with a temperature of 38°C, whose beneficial effects have been known since the fourteenth century. It contains calcium and magnesium ions and is especially good for the locomotor system, neurological diseases, occupational diseases, and drinking cures.

The most famous highwayman, Juraj Jánošík, was born in the mountainous village of Terchová in the north-west of Slovakia. The inhabitants of Terchová had a statue of their native made to guard the entrance to the Vrátna valley.

Fierce fights for the strategic gap of the Váh and the mountain range Malá Fatra near Strečno in the north-west of Slovakia took place between the German army and the partisans of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP). A memorial was built on the hill Zvonica to commemorate the dead heroes.
On the left bank of the Váh river, close to Žilina, you find the Strečno Castle on top of the limestone rock. In the past it was the safest fort in the Považie region.

The gothic wooden Roman Catholic church of St George is the oldest architectural monument in village Trnové. It stands on the local cemetery.
The Orava Gallery with 8,000 pieces of works of art is one of the most important public galleries in Slovakia. The Orava Gallery, which is a regional gallery for Zilina region, was founded in 1965 and is located in the town of Dolný Kubín in the 17th-century County House on Hviezdoslav's Square.
The Castle of Sklabiňa towers on the edge of the basin Turčianska kotlina and the mountains Veľká Fatra. It was first mentioned in 1242. After 1320, the Sklabiňa Castle became the seat of the county administration of Turiec.
In practice, the logging railway in Oravská Lesná in Orava was not only cheaper with respect to the construction and operation, compared to the conventional railways, but it also could cope with a very rugged terrain. Nowadays, it is not used for the original purpose – the transport of timber, but it serves as an attraction of the Orava Museum.
