Divadlo vzniklo v r. 1957 pod názvom Štátne bábkové divadlo. Divadlo a.ha vzniklo v roku 1991 ako komorné profesionálne divadlo. Založili ho režisér Štefan Korenči, dramaturgička Viki Janoušková a manažérka Monika Korenčiová. „a.ha“ v jeho názve vyjadrovalo spojenie „ako hosť“. Prvou premiérou bola inscenácia Štefana Korenčiho hry Edwarda Albeeho ZOO story.
