NNM-Dobročský prales is one of the oldest conservation areas in Slovakia (since 1913). It inheres in absolute altitude of 700-1000 m above a sea-level and its area is 103.85 ha. The reason for its protection is the preservation of original forests that have been shaping for centuries. The development of Dobročský prales takes part in all stages (growing stage, optimum, destruction) and phases (reproduction and decline) that create characteristic image of the wildwood. The development cycle lasts four hundred years. The curiosity of primeval forest of Dobročský prales are trees and animals.

The Forest Open-Air Museum is a living museum in nature. In the locality Tri vody near Osrblie stands the oldest blast furnace in the Kingdom of Hungary built in 1795.

The Horehronské Museum in Brezno was established in 1960 as a National history and geography museum of the Brezno District. The museum is situated in two historical buildings in the square in Brezno: in the old Town Hall (it houses theethnographic exposition) and in a burgess house (it houses the historical exposition).

Bystrý potok - Waterfall, better known as Bystré waterfall or Bystrô waterfall, is one of the most attractive natural creations of its kind in Slovakia.

Zaujímavú trasu ponúka aj región Gemeru. Priamo z Tisovca sa totiž dvakrát vypraví unikátna historická parná zubačka, ktorá cestujúcich prevezie cez Čertov viadukt, či viadukt Pod Dielom až na Zbojskú. Zubačka Tisovec je historickou pripomienkou niekdajšej baníckej slávy gemerského regiónu a na svojej trati prekonáva až 50 % stúpanie.

Many tragic events are connected with the years of the World War II. One of the saddest ones happened near the village of Nemecká, central Slovakia and a reverence memorial was built for its victims there.

The Turkish bridge over the river Ipeľ in Poltár, in the south of central Slovakia, is the third oldest preserved bridge of its kind in Slovakia.
